SA teen shines in 4x400m World Relay Gold

Date: May 20, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) 17-year-old Leendert Koekemoer is fast becoming one of the brightest athletics prospects after his standout performance at the recent World Athletics Relay Championships in Guangzhou, China.

The matric pupil played a pivotal role in Team SA’s  gold medal victory in the 4x400 metres relay.

Koekemoer delivered an impressive run in the third leg, clocking 44.23 seconds and helping turn a narrow deficit into a race-winning position. At the time he received the baton, Botswana had a slight advantage over the South Africans, but the teenager’s perfectly timed effort ensured the momentum shifted in Team SA’s favour.

He handed the baton to Zakithi Nene, who brought the race home to secure the top podium spot for the team. Despite feeling nervous before the race, Koekemoer said he remained calm and focused when it mattered most.
