SA superfans to no longer enjoy benefits from Sports Department: Minister

Date: Jul 12, 2024

South African (SA) Sport Minister, Gayton McKenzie, says superfans in SA have been enjoying the sponsorship of the department and because of this they will no longer pay the travel and accommodation costs for superfans.

McKenzie says the money that the department used to sponsor super fans, Joy "Mama Joy" and Botha Msila, would be reallocated to other things.

In February, the department revealed that the cost of sending Mama Joy and Msila to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France amounted to about $72 000. McKenzie  says supefans who want to go to any games should use their money.

“How do I as a Minister justify sending Mama Joy paying R1.3 million about ($72 000) sending them business class, top hotels while the people she's supposed to go and watch can't even get there she gets there before them. We love Mama Joy but whose going to watch if I can't get these people.

“If you are really a super fan, you'll get yourself there. Or that's why we have television.”
