The 38-year-old is currently unattached after officially parting ways with Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco early last month. He has since returned home for a short break while assessing his next move with his representatives.
Pyramids recently won the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League title, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 on aggregate. However, shortly after what he described as his greatest achievement, Coach Krunoslav Jurcic was vague about his future with the club.
While it remains unclear whether Jurcic will stay or leave, the public broadcaster has it on good authority that the club is already evaluating potential replacements.
Zamalek were the most recent club to approach Mokwena, but the former Sundowns coach withdrew from discussions after learning that his mentor, Pitso Mosimane, was also a contender for the same position.
It now remains to be seen whether Mokwena will consider a return to North Africa, following what he admitted was a difficult spell in Morocco with Wydad, who will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup this month under a new coach.
