The tournament carries high stakes, with the eventual winner set to clinch Africa’s only direct qualification spot for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.
The Sables were hosted at State House, where Mnangagwa presented financial support and encouraged the team to give their best in the competition. He challenged the players to not only defend their title but also push for greater success beyond the tournament.
Zimbabwe Rugby Union Chief Executive Officer Sifiso Made said the president’s donation came as a surprise, describing it as a timely boost for the team. “The support from His Excellency was completely unexpected, but it arrived at the perfect time. It has given the boys extra motivation to perform and fight for both the trophy and a place at the World Cup,” said Made.
The Sables are eyeing a return to the global stage after a lengthy absence, with their last Rugby World Cup appearance dating back to 1991.
