Apologies to SA’s Proteas captain: Minister

Date: Jun 19, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Sport and Recreation Minister Gayton McKenzie has called out those who criticised Proteas captain Temba Bavuma to apologise, following his heroic performance in Test Championship to lead SA to glory at Lord's in London.

The Proteas landed back in the country on Wednesday morning, arriving to a hero's welcome at OR Tambo International airport with the mace held aloft by Bavuma.

McKenzie says the diminutive batter, who has never lost a test match as captain, deserves a lot more respect than what was afforded him over the years.

There was a lot of unfair criticism against our captain citizen. He was critized by a person who don't even know the sport . they used to  write stuff and they started delegated those steadfast that the fastest  bowler and I know to say to you Temba, this country is fully rich because of are a citizen  of this country.

”For their efforts, the Proteas are expected to pocket something from government, as is tradition with national team returning with international silverware. McKenzie announced that President Cyril Ramamphosa has invited the team to have dinner with him, and will likely announce a financial reward for them.

When we go see the resident for lunch or dinner, Il tell Ramaphosa .  We owe this team react debt of attitude and we need to do something for them as government.”
