Date: Apr 7, 2025

South African (SA) Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC) President Barry Hendricks believes the country's model of Athletes development inclusive of Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth games and more, can benefit Africa.

Speaking to Channel Africa Sport, SASCOC President Barry Hendricks explains, “I am hoping other African countries will follow the SA model where we don’t have a separation of functions between the Olympics , paralympics, world games , commonwealth, Africa games.

In South Africa they are all under one umbrella and in that way we safe costs and we are able to focus on the athlete.”

Hendricks is adamant that SASCOC is making great progress in supporting athletes and he compares Paris Olympics 2024 with the next edition taking place in the USA, Los Angeles in 2028, ”You must remember in the build up to Paris 2024, We only had 1 year for support for the athletes. Now for 2028 LA, we have four years of supporting our athletes in three tires in the OPEX, and will be supported throughout for years and not one.”
