SA U20 coach now focuses on FIFA World Cup

Date: May 20, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka says preparing thoroughly for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile later this year and avoiding mistakes that could have derailed their plans for the AFCON U20 tournament are among his priorities.

The team landed this morning at the OR Tambo International Airport, as the first-ever South African junior national team to have been crowned continental champions. Amajita went to the AFCON without having played a single international friendly against one of the qualified teams, something Mdaka wants to avoid for the World Cup...

We are going  to the meeting for the draw and then coming back we will know where we are. We always have to look a the calendar at home  and FIFA calendar, we must also squeeze yourself where  you don't allow that we don't have squabbles.}

Mdaka had earlier spoken about having 80 per cent of his squad for the World Cup in Chile already, and he's now clarified that this percentage includes the players who weren't part of this tournament, including Shandre Campbell and Mbekezeli Mbokazi, ”When I say 80% I think they are included  There are these other three players we talk about.  These players we have been with them. We started camp with them , so we don't have a challenge with them, unless something come up. When we talk about the 80 percent we talking about the players who started the camp.”
