SA’s 98th Comrades Marathon set for June with record prize money

Date: Jun 3, 2025

The KwaZulu-Natal eThekwini Municipality  in South Africa (SA) has confirmed that preparations for the 98th Comrades Marathon are in full swing.

The iconic event, one of the biggest sporting occasions on the SA calendar, is scheduled to take place on the 8th of June.

The 2025 Comrades Marathon will feature a record prize purse of over $423 000, marking a significant increase from previous years. The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) also revealed that prize money across all age categories and team prizes has been raised.

In addition to the increased prize money, the CMA has introduced a bonus of $31 000 for the winners if they break the existing record times for the down run.

Despite the rise in prize money, the CMA has decided not to increase the entry fee for the 2025 Comrades Marathon, ensuring the race remains accessible for participants.

This year’s event is set to attract top athletes from around the world, with the record prize purse and bonus incentives adding further excitement to the already highly anticipated marathon.
