WAFCON title defence not yet in mind: Banyana Coach

Date: Jul 12, 2025

Banyana Banyana Coach Desiree Ellis says there's still a long way to go in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco, and they are not yet thinking about defending the title.

SA, who are the defending champions, were held to a 1-all draw by a stubborn Tanzania last night.

Banyana Banyana are still top of Group C with four points, but they will need at least a draw in their final group match against Mali to advance to the quarter-finals.

Banyana Banyana were the overwhelming favourites to win against the lowly ranked Tanzania in their second group match of the tournament, after brushing aside Ghana on Monday. Ellis says she had to remind her players at halftime that they need to play according to their strengths.

"Instead of moving the ball around like we asked, we kept on playing long. That is not our strength, though; putting the ball on the ground, that's our strength, and I think that changed everything. I think it's too early to talk about titles; I think it's too early to talk about defending. There's still a long way to go. There are still more games to be played, so for us it's one game at a time. We don't want to think too far ahead because then you lose focus of what's right in front, and right in front of us it's the next game."
