This historic victory seals Zimbabwe’s first appearance at the global showpiece since 1991.
With the win, Zimbabwe becomes only the second African side, after reigning world champions South Africa, to secure a spot at the expanded 24-team World Cup, which will be held in Australia in 2027.
It is also a significant moment for African rugby, with Zimbabwe becoming just the third team from the continent to qualify for the tournament in the professional era. Namibia, a regular feature at the World Cup after competing in the last seven editions, will now have to fight for a place through the repechage route.
The Sables seemed in full control, leading 30-16 with 20 minutes left on the clock. However, Namibia mounted a late charge, scoring two tries to narrow the deficit and nearly snatched victory with a long-range penalty that drifted wide in the dying moments.
Saturday’s result was only Zimbabwe’s fourth victory over Namibia in 35 meetings, making the outcome all the more remarkable. Namibia will face the United Arab Emirates, runners-up in the Asia Rugby Championship, next weekend in Uganda. The winner will progress to the final qualification tournament.
