Since its inception in 1996, the Comrades Amabeadibeadi Charity Drive has raised over R76 million for the association’s official charities.
CMA Marketing and Communications Manager Delaine Cools stated all runners are encouraged to participate in the initiative.
“In order for runners to sign up for charity, they need to log into their profile on the Comrades Marathon website, once they have entered and can opt to run for either of the six charities. You have to run for an official Comrades charity, raise a minimum of R6 000 for charity and you will get to be seeded in the C batch, which we term the Charity batch. So, for runners who are usually backup, the pack runners, they have an opportunity to increase and get to the front line of the comrade’s race.
“Meanwhile, entries for next year’s race on June 8th are officially open. The 98th edition will be a down run, starting at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finishing at Durban’s People’s Park. Entries close on December 9th or once the entry cap is reached,” Cools adds.
The Comrades Marathon Association says it intends to cap the number of entrants at 23 000 runners. Participants can register online at the official Comrades Marathon website or through the Comrades Marathon app.
