“Banyana Banyana final squad has enough versatility to defend WAFCON”

Date: Jun 25, 2025

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis believes her final squad has enough versatility to help carry out the big task of defending their Women's Africa Cup of Nation title in Morocco.

The squad includes with two non-travelling reserves in Nthabiseng Majiya and Casey Gordon. Ellis says there are different phases in challenging for a continental title, which require players who can transition from one position to another in case key players get injured.

And I think the friendlies showed us the versatility we have, that is going to be very important . You look at Fifi she has played all positions except goalkeeper, Lebohang is another one she is a defender but can also play on the wing.

So those types of players is what we looked for to give us options as in a tournament like this you have to make sure you rotate at the right time and have your players ready for the later pars of the tournament.”

Ellis explains why rising star Gordon will remain a non-travelling reverse, citing lack of experience and adding that it would be unwise to throw her in the deep end.

Casey lost  out because of  a  lack of experience, we also have to make sure that if anything happens to the two keeper, we have enough experience and it wouldn't have been fair to throw her in the deep end. There will be more camps, and Cosafa tournaments where we could give her experience. We do have a problem with goalkeeping I think there aren't may keep coaches out there.”
