Uganda names provisional squad for 2024 CHAN, eyes first-ever knockout spot

Date: Jul 2, 2025

Uganda has taken a major step towards its long-held ambition of progressing beyond the group stage of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The country’s football federation has unveiled a 41-man provisional squad for the 2024 edition of the tournament.

The Cranes will co-host the competition for the first time alongside East African neighbours Kenya and Tanzania, with the continental contest set to kick off on August 2, 2025.

Head coaches Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso have been tasked with guiding the team, which is composed entirely of players based in Uganda, in line with CHAN regulations. Most of the squad members hail from the Uganda Premier League, the country’s top-flight division.

One notable inclusion is James Bogere from Masaka Sunshine FC, a club competing in the regional league. His selection has drawn attention, as it breaks the otherwise Premier League-dominated lineup.

With the advantage of home support and familiar playing conditions, Uganda will be hoping to finally break its group stage ceiling and make a historic run in this year’s tournament.
