Banyana Banyana coach sticks to 2022 recipe for Women's AFCON

Date: Jun 23, 2025

The coach of the South African (SA) women's football team, Desiree Ellis, has stuck to the recipe that worked for her in 2022 when Banyana Banyana won the Women's Africa Cup of Nations title for the very first time

She has named three captains in her 26-player squad for this year's edition of the tournament to be played in Morocco from the fifth to the 26th of next month.

Midfielders, Refiloe Jane and Amogelang Motau, as well as defender, Lebohang Ramalepe will share the responsibilities. Jane, who was also one of the co-captains in 2022, has welcomed her inclusion.

"I am honoured again, it is such a privilege to be selected as one of the leaders of the team and with the experience I have gained over the years it's important, I can also share that with the upcoming players. it's not easy to be the leader in the team but when we work together everything becomes easy," Jane said.

Ellis again opted for the three captains not to burden one player with all the responsibility for the duration of a three-week long tournament. Banyana start the defense of their title with a Group C match against Ghana in Oujda on July 07.
