SA football legend arrives in Nairobi to finalise Harambee Stars deal

Date: Feb 28, 2025

South African (SA) football legend Benni McCarthy has landed in Nairobi, Kenya ahead of his official unveiling as the new coach of Kenya's national team, the Harambee Stars.

McCarthy, who previously worked as a Striker Coach at Manchester United (Man Utd), touched down on Thursday morning to finalise his contract with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). His appointment will be formally announced this Friday.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers marked the end of Engin Firat's tenure as Head Coach, following Kenya's failure to secure a place in Morocco. McCarthy's appointment follows intense discussions within the Kenya Football Federation in December, where his name was highly regarded. Notably, McCarthy secured the role after beating out competition from French football icon Claude Makelele, who was also a leading candidate.

This appointment marks McCarthy's return to top-level coaching, following his exit from Man Utd at the end of last season.
