Former IBA Chairperson weighs in on gender controversy at Olympics

Date: Aug 7, 2024

Former Chairperson of the International Boxing Association's (IBA) medical committee, Dr Ioannis Filippatos has weighed in on the gender controversy surrounding Algeria's Imane Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting at this year's Paris Olympics.

Filippatos  was speaking during a press conference on Tuesday alongside IBA's Russian chief Umar Kremlev and Chief Executive Officer Chris Roberts, where they attempted to clarify why his association threw out Khelif and Yu-ting from their World Championships last year.
The press conference descended into chaos amid technical errors, language barriers and raised tempers. Filipatos explains further,“ I try to say that the medical result, blood result, looks and the laboratory says that these boxers are male.
This is the problem now we try now to say I see the results so  we try now to say why it has happened like that you are understand me. We are not against Khelif she is a very good boxer.”
