The South African champions needed a win to advance to the round of 16 but were unable to break down a disciplined Fluminense side, who progressed instead.

Head coach Miguel Cardoso named an unchanged starting XI from the 4 nil defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, while Fluminense opted to rest veteran centre-back Thiago Silva

The result sees Fluminense progress to the last 16, while Sundowns,  who exit the tournament with one win, a draw and one loss from their three group-stage matches,  can hold their heads high for exceeding expectations on the world stage.

Sundowns became the last of four African representatives in the competition eliminated, though Wydad AC still have a match left to play.
