The 35-year-old from Bothaville in the Free State completed the 56-kilometre race in three hours, 29 minutes and 10 seconds her third-fastest time ever. She finished eight minutes and 40 seconds ahead of Shelmith Muriuki of Kenya.
Steyn will pocket R250 000 ($13 091.34) for the win but narrowly missed out on another course record by just over two minutes, which would have earned her an additional R250 000 ($13 091.34).
Lesotho's Khoarahlane Seutloali won the men’s race in three hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds, crossing the finish line 31 seconds ahead of South Africa’s Siboniso Sikhakhane, with Lucky Mohale in third place.
