Date: May 29, 2025

South Africa's (SA) women's senior national team's preparations for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July are well on track.

The African Champions narrowly beat Botswana 3-2 in a three nation friendly match at the Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville on Wednesday afternoon.

SA is featuring in a three-nation tournament featuring the neighbours Botswana and Zambia. Banyana Banyana coach Dr Desiree Ellis admits that the Women Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON title defence will not be easy for her side.

Desiree Ellis says they will take it one game at a time, ”We take it game by game day by day we don’t have this thing , we know where we want to go but by game by game and day by day and I think that worked for us in the past where you know the first game if don’t have the points in that one you always are on the back foot but it doesn’t mean you are out because the best second the best third and all of that also needs to get in but we don’t want to be put in that position we want this thing in our hands not sure.

We don’t want to out calculators we don’t want to say what this team have to do and that team that I think its not going to be easy make no mistake.”

Ellis speaks about different mechanisms the team should implement to be able to deal with the quality of opponents they will be faced with in North Africa....

“ So it show that a lot of countries have put in a lot of investment to make that they get into this stage. We just have to take it game by game day by day and prepare very very well and have different scenarios.”
