“AFCON could give Bafana Bafana needed test for 2026 World cup”

Date: Jan 27, 2025

Hugo Broos, the head coach of South Africa's men's national football team believes the African Cup of Nations in Morocco later this year could give his team the much-needed test for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 2025 AFCON tournament will be held from  December 21, 2025, January 18, 2026, just six months prior to the start of the World Cup in  the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Though Bafana qualification fate could only be known by October, Broos would like to also use the continental tournament to measure his side's readiness for the global showpiece next year.

Yeah because, six months later there is World Cup. I think if we qualify for the world cup we can make it  good AFCON there. It will help us in the world cup. I said there before when I came here and was disrespectful to the team and got into trouble, but I don’t want to play against Zimbabwe and Lesotho,  I want to play  against big teams
