The track, located north of Johannesburg, has not hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix since 1993, the last time the sport visited Africa. Currently holding an FIA Grade 2 licence, Kyalami is not eligible to stage F1 events in its present condition. However, the planned upgrades, developed in collaboration with United Kingdom-based Apex Circuit Designs, are designed to elevate the circuit to meet the highest international standards required for Formula 1.
The proposed changes will not alter the layout of the track but will focus on key safety and infrastructure enhancements. These include improved run-off areas, advanced barrier systems, upgraded debris fencing, revised kerbs, and enhanced drainage to meet the rigorous criteria set by motorsport’s governing body.
Circuit owner Toby Venter confirmed the approval, saying the FIA’s green light marks a significant milestone. “This is a major step forward for motorsport in SA,” Venter said. “We now have the green light to pursue the dream of returning Formula 1 to Kyalami.”
Kyalami is one of three venues vying to host a potential African round of the Formula 1 calendar. While enthusiasm for the return of a Grand Prix to the continent remains high among fans and stakeholders, F1 Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali has cautioned that a final deal remains some distance away.
