Broos pleased with Bafana’s Tanzania display despite goalless draw

Date: Jun 7, 2025

Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos says he is happy with the performance by the South African (SA) team during the friendly match against Tanzania.

A new look Bafana Bafana side played out to a goalless draw against Tanzania in an international friendly match. The game ended in a goalless draw at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane on Friday night.

Broos has also acknowledged that the structure of the team needs to improve ahead of Tuesday’s encounter with Mozambique at the same venue.

Fawaaz Basadien had an opportunity to lead a team comprised of young players.

Broos says he wants to give all the selected players a chance to play during the friendlies.

“We have a new team today, we have players who didn’t play together except for the players from the same team. So it was that easy. I said before the game that the results is not important, surely we wanted to win the game today, but the performance was more important and I’m happy with what i saw tonight, if you bring 23 players together and select eleven of players who never played together to play a game, it is not easy. There was no chance for Tanzania today. I couldn’t ask for more, I’m happy with the performance of some players, but there are others who could have done better, what I wanted to see, I saw today, and that’s what is important.”

New players
Coach Broos made a wholesale change to the team that played Bafana Bafana’s last match in March. All Mamelodi Sundowns players have been given a break from national duty due to their club’s upcoming participation at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States from next week.

This gave a chance to a number of new faces as coach Broos also had three debutants in the starting eleven, which was captained by Stellenbosch’s player of the season, Fawaaz Basadien.

The 27-year-old Stellenbosch FC full-back will also lead the youthful Bafana squad during their next international friendly match against the Mambas of Mozambique on Tuesday.
