Blitzboks turn of fortunes inspires SA’s Olympic contingent

Date: Jul 26, 2024

South Africa’s contingent at the Paris Olympic Games have drawn inspiration from the way the Blitzboks turned their fortunes around to reach the semi-finals and stay within medal contention.

The team was welcomed by South Africa’s ambassador in France, Nathi Mthethwa, while newly appointed Minister of Sports, Art and Culture, Gayton McKenzie provided further inspiration for the athletes.

The spirit of South Africa was on full display in Paris in the run-up to the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

Minister McKenzie reminded the athletes that the country is behind them, they should embrace their heritage and be proud of their achievements.

“Don’t stand back for nobody because you are South African and whether you’re going to run or swim, you go there knowing that you’re going to win and because you qualified you are already special.”

Looking ahead at the weekend, South Africa’s swimmers will be in action and they can rely on a legend in the form of Chad Le Clos to guide them…

“There’s no higher honour than the Olympics.”

And the way the Blitzboks reached the semi-finals of the men’s sevens event, inspired all.

The team was written off after day one, but on day two they dramatically turned their fortunes around, beating New Zealand in the quarterfinal. But, coach Philip Snyman wants them to improve even further.

“The defence worked well but we spilled many opportunities on attack and we need to keep possession better”

Other action to look out for is South African mountain biker Alan Hatherly who will be in action on Monday in the men’s cross-country event.

His recent form suggests he’s a serious medal contender.
