SA’s Norval honoured to serve as captain ahead of Davis Cup against Nigeria

Date: Jan 28, 2025

South African(SA) tennis legend Pietie Norval says he's honoured to serve as captain ahead of the upcoming Davis Cup matches against Nigeria at the Groenkloof Tennis Club in Pretoria this weekend.

With more than 20 years of experience as a player and seven Davis Cup appearances, Norval has selected Leo Matthysen, Kris Van Wyk, Alec Beckley, and Philip Henning for his team in the World Group Two playoff tie.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Norval expressed confidence in his team's chances, as they reported for camp on Monday to begin their preparations for the matches.

Personally from my side I am proud to bring my experience to this team. Been a captain of the Davis Cup team is an honour a coach and former player.

So that is an honour. I look forward to spending time with the players . Davis Cup we get together a week before and is special because its a team environment and its nicer compared to what these guys are used to traveling the world as individuals.”

Nigeria is widely recognized as a football powerhouse, and their tennis team often goes under the radar.

However, Norval has been diligently researching the team, paying close attention to a few of their standout players. While SA is considered the favourite, Norval has cautioned against underestimating the visitors.

In the past Nigeria  has always had good players, so they have ess now compared to five and 10 years ago. And that’s the sport of tennis , not as popular as soccer in our country. But tennis is the second most biggest sport in Europe , so tennis is a big sport globally. Africa has teams that are as good as we are. Morocco, Tunisa, and Nigeria they are competitive, and I know they a one or two players that are competitive, don’t think as competitive as our guys.”
