The two sides last met in the tournament back in 2010, when Tanzania made their WAFCON debut. In a tightly contested Group A clash, Mali edged out the East Africans 3-2.
Since then, the West Africans have experienced a mixed run in the competition. After missing the 2012 and 2014 editions, Mali returned in 2016 but failed to progress beyond the group stage. However, they made history in 2018 by reaching the semi-finals in Ghana, ultimately finishing fourth, their best-ever performance at the continental showpiece.
For Tanzania, this fixture marks their long-awaited return to Africa’s premier women’s football tournament after a 14-year absence. The Twiga Stars will be looking to make a strong statement as they aim to improve on their debut showing.
Both teams will be keen to start their campaigns with a win as they navigate a competitive Group C.
