Commonwealth urges Uganda to release opposition leader Kizza Besigye

Date: Feb 18, 2025

The Commonwealth has called on Uganda to release opposition politician Kizza Besigye, stating that his detention undermines democracy and human rights.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland expressed concern over Besigye’s continued detention, emphasizing that it violates fundamental principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. This marks a rare instance of the organization criticizing one of its member states.

President Yoweri Museveni has dismissed concerns about Besigye’s health, accusing him of using his hunger strike as a tactic to generate sympathy and secure bail. Despite mounting international pressure, Ugandan authorities have yet to signal any intention to release the opposition leader.
