Ndungane was defeated in straight sets by American competitor Kate Fakih, losing 6-2, 6-1 in the women’s singles event. Despite the tough result, the young athlete showed maturity in reflecting on her performance.
“I was quite nervous going into the match because I really wanted to do well for South Africa,” Ndungane said. “The opponent was very strong, and we had some challenging points. It was a tough day, but I have no regrets, I think I played well overall.”
This tournament marks Ndungane’s debut at the World University Games, and she believes the experience has helped her overcome initial nerves. She is hopeful that this will pave the way for improved performances as the competition continues.
The World University Games gather top university athletes worldwide, and Team SA is fielding competitors across various sports.
