WHO donates medical equipment to support Tanzania’s post-Marburg recovery efforts

Date: Jul 18, 2025

Tanzania’s health system has received a significant boost following a donation of essential medical supplies from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The equipment, valued at more than TZS 112 million ($42 500), was handed over to health authorities in Biharamulo District, one of the areas that bore the brunt of the recent Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak.

The supplies include personal protective equipment, diagnostic tools, hospital beds, and emergency medical kits, all aimed at helping to restore routine health services while strengthening the district’s ability to respond to any future disease outbreaks.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Dr Galbert Fedjo, acting WHO Representative in Tanzania, said the donation forms part of continued efforts to support the country’s health services. “This is part of a broader commitment to improving outbreak preparedness and response in Tanzania. We are proud to stand with the government and people of Tanzania as they recover and build stronger systems for the future,”  Fedjo said.

The contribution is funded by the United Kingdom Government through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office . In addition to medical equipment, the support also covers community education campaigns, psychosocial services, and specialised training for health workers in the regions affected by the outbreak.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the government, Dr Erasto Sylvanus, Director of Emergency at the Ministry of Health, expressed his gratitude to WHO and its partners. “This donation comes at a critical time as we focus on strengthening our health services and preparing for any future health threats. We are grateful to WHO and the United Kingdom Government for their continued support,” he said.

Tanzania declared the outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease in March. It was successfully contained following coordinated emergency response efforts by the Ministry of Health, WHO, and various partners. The latest donation is expected to play an important role in the country’s ongoing recovery process and long-term readiness to handle health emergencies.
