SA Education Department vows to strengthen protections against sexual misconduct

Date: May 15, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Basic Education Department has pledged to take a multi-faceted approach to eliminate sexual predators from the education system.

This follows revelations that at least 39 teachers across the country have been found guilty of sexual misconduct against learners.

The Education Labour Relations Council confirmed that most of the offending teachers were from KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Gauteng. The shocking findings have intensified calls for stricter safeguards to protect vulnerable students.

Department Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga emphasised that vetting alone is insufficient in preventing misconduct, highlighting the need for a broader cultural shift within the profession.

“Some people get vetted, but once they are in the system, they engage in criminal activity. Vetting is not a guarantee whatsoever,” Mhlanga stated.

“We need to focus on changing the mindset, reminding adults that they have a duty to protect the young person in front of them, whom they are supposed to educate and nurture.”
