SA mother in court for allegedly selling toddler son to traditional healer for $4 200

Date: Jun 5, 2025

A traditional healer or sangoma and a woman accused of murdering the woman’s two-year-old toddler were expected to apply for bail in a South African (SA) court on Thursday

The woman allegedly sold the boy to the sangoma for R75 000 ($4 200).

The toddler’s mother, Keneilwe Shalaba and the sangoma, Sebokoana Khoanyana, face multiple charges, including premeditated murder and human trafficking. In November last year, Shalaba reported that her child had been kidnapped.

She was arrested three days later after confessing to selling her son to a sangoma, claiming she was not happy with the child’s gender. Cellphone records reportedly led police to Khoanyana, who allegedly confessed to playing a part in the disappearance and pointed out where the child was buried after his arrest.
