Let’s wait for President to act on Mkhwanazi’s allegations: SARS Commissioner

Date: Jul 7, 2025

South African Revenue Service (SARS) Commissioner Edward Kieswetter says SA must wait for President Cyril Ramaphosa to take action over allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal province Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi has accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu of being in constant contact with individuals linked to criminal activities.

During a media briefing held on Sunday, Mkhwanazi also accused some senior police officials of being involved in corruption.

Kieswetter says SARS has a good working relationship with police.

“I think one must for now hold judgement until the President looks at the matter and hopefully will do what’s necessary. So that ultimately the truth can be discovered. South Africans can be ensured that the SAPS, at least those who rely on for public safety, that the integrity of such an important institution is protected and preserved.”

“We obviously as SARS had an active engagement with the SAPS. We often have joint operations with SAPS and the BMA when we do customs searches and seizure procedures,” adds Kieswetter.
