Tanzania’s PM steps down from 2025 parliamentary race after 15 years

Date: Jul 3, 2025

Tanzania’s Prime Minister (PM) Kassim Majaliwa has confirmed he will not be seeking re-election in the 2025 general elections, effectively ending a 15-year journey as the Member of Parliament for Ruangwa constituency.

Majaliwa first entered Parliament in 2010 and quickly rose through the ranks of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM). He was appointed Prime Minister in 2015 during the administration of the late President John Magufuli and retained the position under President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

He made the announcement during a local party meeting, stating his decision was guided by a desire to pave the way for new leadership and to support the party's renewal ahead of the polls. His departure marks a significant shift in Tanzania's political landscape as CCM prepares for what is expected to be a competitive election season.
