DRC authorities launch bid to strip Kabila’s immunity to face trial

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have launched a bid to strip former President Joseph Kabila of his immunity so he can face trial on charges of supporting the M23 insurgency in the country's east.

Kabila, left the DRC for 18 years, after succeeding his father Laurent, who was killed in 2001. 

After stepping down, he was given the title of, Senator for life, which gives him legal immunity. 

Now, in order to pursue a legal case against Kabila, DRC's military prosecutor has asked the senate to overturn his lifelong immunity.
