The incident occurred outside Musina in Limpopo province.
According to the BMA, the suspects were intercepted through the use of drone technology, which is increasingly being deployed to monitor illegal activities along South Africa’s borders. The arrests were made in collaboration with the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) and the SA Police Service (SAPS).
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Rudzani Mphilo said the use of drones is proving effective in safeguarding the country’s borders.
“We were able to direct the reaction force on the ground, made up of SANDF and SAPS, through the drone. They managed to intercept and we have just now arrested five illegal immigrants smuggling goods out of the country. They will be processed accordingly,” said Mphilo.
The BMA says it remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of the Beitbridge port-of-entry and other key borderlines.
