SA maintains control amid global Mpox concerns

Date: Aug 19, 2024

Following the World Health Organisation's declaration of Mpox outbreaks as a public health emergency, South Africa’s National Institute For Communicable Diseases (NCID) reassures the public that the situation is under control.

Despite the alarming death toll of 450 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, SA authorities have reported only three fatalities and emphasize that there is no cause for panic.

The Department of Health has confirmed that the outbreak remains contained, with a total of 24 cases reported this year, a decrease from the five cases in 2022 and none in 2023.

Professor Adrian Puren, Executive Director at the NICD, highlights the extensive preparations and multi-sectoral efforts to prevent transmission, involving the national and provincial departments of health and other partners.

The proactive approach and continued vigilance are key to SA's effective management of the Mpox outbreak.
