Ramaphosa said the convention would be representative of all sectors of society, offering a platform for citizens to shape the nation’s development path.

The initiative is expected to bring together a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including government, business, labour, civil society, youth, people with disabilities, the LGBTQI+ community, and residents of both rural and urban areas.

“We are therefore called upon at this moment to build a thriving inclusive economy that creates jobs and opportunities,” Ramaphosa said. “We are called upon to build safer communities and create a better future for our children. It’s an opportunity to forge a new social compact for the development of our country.”

Ramaphosa emphasised that the national dialogue would serve as a critical moment for reflection, collaboration, and action in shaping South Africa’s next 30 years. He called on all citizens to unite in defining a shared national vision.

To co-ordinate government’s contribution to the process, Ramaphosa announced the formation of an inter-ministerial committee, chaired by Deputy President Paul Mashatile. In addition, a steering committee will be established, comprising representatives from across society to set strategic priorities and guide implementation of the dialogue outcomes.

“The Secretariat, which is responsible for day-to-day management of national dialogue activities, will be housed at the National Economic Development and Labour Council,” Ramaphosa added.
