SA Chief Justice applaud the work of Constitutional Court

Date: Jun 20, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Chief Justice Mandisa Maya has lauded the work of the Constitutional Court in the thirty years of its existence.

Maya was speaking in an interview with South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) News, ahead of an event being held today at the court in Johannesburg.

This is to celebrate 30 years since the court's establishment.

She outlined some of the most monumental judgments delivered by the Constitutional Court.

"In my view it would have to be its first judgement State versus Mokonyane which entrenched the right to life, which declared the death penalty unconstitutional and struck it down.

There is nothing more precious than life and that judgement set the tone for the work of the court and the approaches it was going to assume going forward."
