NGOs call for suspension of Mozambique Presidential inauguration

Date: Jan 9, 2025

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Mozambique have called for the suspension of the inauguration of Frelimo's Daniel Chapo, scheduled for next Wednesday.

The NGOs have urged South African (SA) President Cyril Ramaphosa to leverage SA influence within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to seek the suspension of the ceremony. They attribute their concerns to alleged irregularities during the registration process ahead of last year's elections, which they blame on Mozambique's Electoral Commission.

Amnesty International has also weighed in, urging SADC to find an urgent solution to the ongoing political stand-off in Mozambique. The organisation's Executive Director, Irungu Houghton, expressed deep concern over the situation, highlighting the loss of over 100 lives in the past two months.

"We have been watching the developments for the last two months. We are very concerned about the over 100 deaths we have seen. We have repeatedly called on SADeC and the international community to intervene to ensure the safeguarding of lives. We will continue to do so until we see human rights being protected in the Mozambican context," Houghton stated.
