SADC summit resolves to withdraw peacekeeping troops from DRC

Date: Mar 13, 2025

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government meeting, held virtually, has concluded with a resolution to withdraw peacekeeping mission troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The extraordinary meeting was convened to discuss the security situation in the eastern DRC.

Speaking to the SABC after the meeting, International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola described the discussions as fruitful.

The summit reached a groundbreaking resolution regarding humanitarian access, the reopening of Goma airport, and engaging with non-state actors, including a phased withdrawal of SAMIDRC forces.

Additionally, the summit called for the withdrawal of all forces not invited into the conflict, emphasizing the need to engage these parties in the ceasefire process. The sovereignty of the DRC remains a priority and must continue to be respected.
