SA Education Minister emphasises teaching boys respect to combat GBV

Date: Mar 31, 2025

South Africa's (SA) Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, says teaching young boys respect is key to ending violence against women and children.

She was speaking at the Uyinene Mrwetyana Commemorative Lecture at Kingswood College in the Eastern Cape province.

Uyinene Mrwetyana was a SA student at the University of Cape Town. The 19-year-old was raped and murdered in Cape Town in August 2019.

Gwarube stressed the importance of educating boys about gender-based violence (GBV) from an early age, saying, "If we want to create a society free from gender-based violence, we must start by teaching boys about respect and responsibility from a young age."
