SA Former President urges Africa to use G20 Summit to push continental agenda

Date: May 24, 2025

Former South African (SA) President Thabo Mbeki says the upcoming G20 Summit should serve as a platform to highlight the challenges faced by the African continent.

He was speaking at a dialogue on "Building Consensus for SA's G20: Reigniting Africa's Renaissance," held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, this morning.

Mbeki emphasised the importance of the continent using global platforms to push for meaningful change “There are many major issues that need to be raised in the interest of business and the continent. These must be properly reflected at the G20,” he said.

He further urged African leaders to be proactive and strategic in shaping international decisions that affect the continent.

“The initiative comes from Dar es Salaam, from Tanzania to the rest of the continent that we need, so that we are not faced with defeat like we were in 2010 with the G8 Africa Action Plan, and again in 2011 on Libya. We must say we are aiming for victory, but that victory entirely depends on our strength.”
