SA Medical Association warns of increased emergency incidents due to festive season alcohol consumption

Date: Dec 23, 2024

The South African (SA) Medical Association (SAMA) has expressed concern over anticipated emergency incidents due to increased alcohol consumption during the festive season.

The association has warned of the adverse consequences of alcohol use, which include a high number of road traffic accidents during this period.

"We know that during the festive season in SA, alcohol consumption often increases due to celebrations, social gatherings, and holiday events. However excessive drinking, as we know, can lead to several dangerous consequences both individually and for society at large. You'd note the increase in road traffic accidents—SA has one of the highest rates of alcohol-related fatalities. Out of the 1 427 that we've seen in 2023, one-third of that is due to alcohol-related incidents," said Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa, Chairperson of the SAMA.

SAMA's warning highlights the need for increased awareness and preventive measures to mitigate the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption during the festive season. The association urges the public to drink responsibly and prioritise safety to avoid tragic incidents.
