‘Public should trust SA President on Mkhwanazi probe’

Date: Jul 15, 2025

South African (SA) Retired Constitutional Court Justice Johann Kriegler has weighed in on the commission of inquiry announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa to investigate allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Kriegler believes that commissions of inquiry are often used as a political tool by the head of state to decide whether or not to prosecute.

Despite this, he’s urged the public to trust  Ramaphosa’s decision to establish the commission, which will investigate the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

“All I can say is that the quality of the work that is produced and the effect of the outcome of the findings of the commission depends on a lot of people. It’s not an objective predictable result; it will depend on how well the job is done and much more important is how effectively the report of the judge is implemented.”
