The city, which had been a refuge for hundreds of thousands of civilians displaced by the civil war, fell to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) without resistance from the army.
The army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, blamed the loss on negligence and incompetence of some commanders and vowed to hold them accountable.
