Date: Oct 10, 2023

The Zimbabwean government through the Medicines Control Association of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has deregistered a number of pharmacies owing to the illegal sell of drug with codeine.

Ten wholesale pharmacies and individuals have been deregistered for the next three years for selling drugs illegally.

Zimbabwe is battling with drug use, peddling and sell in pharmacies and the street and a number of youths are hooked. “ In this regard, the Authority, has revoked 6 permits for wholesale dealers and cancelled 4 persons licences who were promoting abuse of Histalix, a locally produced cough mixture containing codeine, by illegally selling it at Mbare and places like Chitungwiza and others were exporting to Zambia and Mozambique.

The Authority has put in place mechanism to control availability of codeine containing medicines by making the prescription preparations.

This means that they cannot be dispensed without the provision of a valid prescription.” Chief Registrar with MCAZ , Caroline Dandira said.
