Speaking at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg, Gatete stressed the G20’s potential role in mediating global conflicts. He also warned that climate change is costing Africa 5% of its GDP annually, underscoring the urgent need for global action.
"Definitely. That's why yesterday in my statement, I included that peace and security are a prerequisite. We cannot only talk about development without looking at the issues of peace because it's the nexus between the two, and that's why we need to take them on both at the same time," Gatete said.
"As you rightly mentioned in the Sahel, in the Democratic Republic Congo, in Sudan, and in other parts of Africa, but also globally, they have implications. The effect of Russia-Ukraine war had an impact on us, although it was not on our continent, the inflation went up, and the cost of food went up. So, it doesn't matter where the conflict is, it has an impact on Africa, and that's why we are saying that development, peace, and security have to go hand in hand. The G20, the biggest bloc that you have, can address these kinds of issues."
