SA government to subpoena local municipality over “ignored” service delivery petitions

Date: May 16, 2025

The Standing Committee on Petitions in the Legislature of South Africa’s Gauteng province has announced plans to subpoena the local Emfuleni Municipality

The municipality is expected to come and account as to why it failed to respond to service delivery related petitions submitted to it.

Out of eight petitions submitted by residents, only one received a formal response. The unresolved petitions relates to service delivery failures in the area of Sebokeng and on the Evaton Township Mega Project, as well as disputes around municipal rates bills. Petitions Committee Chairperson, Vuyiswa Jentile says one of these petitions dates as far back as 2013 and remains unresolved.

“This inaction of Emfuleni is not only stalling the resolution of valid community grievances. But it is also undermining the integrity of the Petitions system itself. As public representatives we have a duty to act firmly and decisively because the resolve of our people to barricade streets during protests should not be the language understood by service delivery points before remedial action,” Jentile said.
