Poland to impose temporary ban on right to seek asylum to curb migration

Date: Oct 13, 2024

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has declared the government's intention to impose a temporary suspension on the right to seek asylum.

This move comes as a response to the escalating situation of irregular migration, which has been a pressing issue for Poland since 2021.

The country has witnessed a substantial influx of individuals, predominantly from the Middle East and Africa, attempting unauthorised border crossings from Belarus.

Officials in Warsaw, supported by the European Union, have characterised this surge as a deliberate crisis instigated by the Belarusian government and its supporter, Russia, allegations both nations have consistently refuted.

The Polish administration's strategy aims to address the complexities of this ongoing dilemma, balancing humanitarian responsibilities with national security concerns.
