Former Malawi President declares bid for 2025 Election

Date: Dec 14, 2023

Malawi's former President Peter Mutharika has declared his bid to stand again during the 2025 Presidential Election.

Mutharika told his Democratic Progressive Party-DPP supporters and delegates attending the National Governing Council (NGC) yesterday in the district of Mangochi that he will first seek re-election.

The meeting came a few days after the embattled DPP's Secretary General, Grezelder Jeffrey, hosted an NGC meeting in Lilongwe, which was described by Mutharika as illegal. from Blantyre.

The announcement means that if the former president Peter Mutharika wins at his Democratic Progressive Party-DPP convention, he will contest the presidency position of the country again.

This is because Malawi's Constitution only bars those who have served two five year consecutive terms from standing and he only served for five years.

The DPP Spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba confirmed that Mutharika has declared to seek re-election at the convention.

"There has been a lot of people pressurizing him, looking at the sufferings Malawians are going through at the moment, so Malawians would want Mutarika to restore the economy where it was before he left the government in 2020
