Parliament to engage SA Presidency on DRC troops deployment

Date: Feb 7, 2025

The South African (SA) Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence wants to engage the Presidency in extending the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This was after the President had sent a letter to the Committee on Christmas Eve of last year, informing it of the extension of the stay of the troops.

However, some Member Parliament's seek clarity on what informed the decision to extend the deployment and the reason for the deployment.

Fourteen soldiers have died as a result of conflict with M23 rebels in Goma, DRC, nearly two weeks ago.

The Co-Chairperson of the Committee Malusi Gigaba says a letter will be written to the Presidency to seek clarity on these matters.

“On why the letter to us arrived outside the seven-day window and we secondly require of the presidency on the exact meaning of the paragraph that talks about support to DRC government to neutralise the rebels in pursuit of peace, so that we have clarity.”
